Bots

Postby beef.Cake² on Wed Nov 18, 2009 12:57 pm

Just deleted about 10 bots that had posted topics and posts, and numerous inactive accounts that had never posted or had been moderated but not deleted. We've been getting a lot recently, was quiet after the initial upgrade to phpbb3 then they come in waves like this morning.

Have updated the forums to the latest version, which claims to have better captcha options, I had already changed visual confirmation options anyway. You can make it harder for bots, but this makes it harder for new signups too which is annoying.

We're already on user verification so they have to use valid email addresses, but there are sites that let you set up 10 minute email accounts so that's pretty useless these days too. Don't really want to push for admin verification as that will cause an unnecessary delay for real users.

Wrong sort of bots :P Those ones read threads to cache searches on their relevant engines. We just want to get rid of the ones that sign up and post crap.
